Throughout this semester, I will be reporting on food, environmentalism, and the intersection among these topics.

Food systems — the web of food production, processing, transport, and consumption that we rely on — and the environment are inextricably linked. Sustainable food production can actually positively effect the environment by embracing biodiversity and encouraging soil health, among other benefits. However, the way we interact with our food systems is also a major cause of climate change, and unsustainable practices contribute to issues with food security and safety. Ithaca’s leadership in sustainability efforts and the prevalence of agrarian life in both Ithaca and Tompkins county makes this intersection extremely relevant.

Ithaca’s active food culture is a centerpiece of the community. With more restaurants per capita than New York City, a diverse array of cuisines and cultures are easily accessible by fork.  Festivals like Apple Fest and Chowder Fest, GreenStar Food Co+op, and the Ithaca Farmers Market demonstrates a locally-focused, AgriCulinary ethos where cultivation and consumption are directly connected.

I find it fascinating how something as everyday and universal as food can provide insight into others’ lives and larger scale issues. As a journalist, connecting local stories to larger narratives is something that interests me; as a human, my own interests in cooking and experiences in agriculture lead me to this junction.

Let me know about your own experiences or concerns, and if there’s anything I should check out!
